Free Kindle Book, available on April Fool's Day
For your enjoyment during the coronavirus outbreak, I’m offering a free book: Chasing Their Losses

Why did I write Chasing Their Losses? If you’ve read my bio, you know that I was the Director of Nutrition Services at an acute care hospital in Indiana for many years.  Hospitals are full of drama.  There’s love, hate, sex, ambition,   and just about every human emotion thrumming in the air.  I always knew I wanted to write a novel set in a small town hospital, but it wasn’t until  after retirement that I  could distance myself from all that intensity.

Here’s a brief synopsis.

Will the haunting power of first love lead to Cara Mackenzie’s destruction? At 31, she’s back home from Miami, starting a new career as nutrition director of Sycamore Hospital.   While in a blossoming romance with Dr. John Drakos, she runs into her former lover, the suave and sexy Tony Cabella. Soon,  she’s drawn into a dangerous web of dirty secrets and lies.

When Tony’s stepson vanishes under her watch, Cara must fight for her life, her reputation, and her career.

The police think Dr. Drakos’ jealousy could have provided a motive for the kidnapping.   But unanswered questions suggest a conspiracy.  Who shot Tony when he and Cara met in secret, and why won’t he call the police?

At the heart of this novel are four damaged people: John and Cara, whose intense relationship is clouded by painful memories and fear of commitment; Tony and his second wife, Gail, who gave up everything for passion and desire,  only to find disillusion and heartbreak.

As the tragic events spin out of control, the heart thumping suspense builds, with twists and turns that take you from the verdant farmland and sparkling waterfalls of Indiana to the vast, lawless sand dunes and nude beaches of Texas.

KARMA STRIKES BACK AT CHARLES

Does anyone remember when Princess Di Married  the Prince of Wales?  From the outside  it looked like a fairytale marriage.  When, in fact, it was a nightmare from the git go.  How many bridegrooms would leave their betrothed alone in a dark room the night before their wedding, while schmoozing on the phone with his old girlfriend?  Apparently, Diana wanted to back out, but her sisters told her she had to go through with it.  She married a man who didn’t love her, and she knew it. If he’d kept it to himself and put on a good show, it wouldn’t have been so bad. But Charles treated her like dirt, divorced her, married Camilla, and thought he got away with it.  But he didn’t.  Because now, bad karma strikes back at Charles.

Karma strikes back at Charles. He treated Di badly, and now it's come back to haunt him.
Karma strikes back at Charles. His sons suffered from the way he treated their mother.

How can anyone believe that the sons of this disastrous union wouldn’t be somewhat psyched up?  Apparently, William was old enough to handle his mother’s miserable marriage, divorce,  and untimely death.  But Harry was just a little kid. At twelve years old, forced to march in a parade behind his mother’s coffin. It’s a miracle he ended up so well.

After the Oprah interview last week with Meghan and Harry, the British press went bonkers. How could Harry say such horrible things about his family on public television?  The question is, why wouldn’t he?   A victim should be able to tell his side of the story in the end.  And yes, Harry was a victim of his father’s narcissistic treatment of his mother.  Are we saying that people with money don’t have emotional problems? That if they do have them, they should be ashamed of themselves?

I have no idea why Charles was such a callous person. Maybe it went back to his Mom trying so hard to be a queen that she didn’t have much time for mothering. Not to mention dealing with a notoriously womanizing husband.  That’s the thing about karma.  It just goes on and on, echoing down through the centuries.

Maybe Harry and Meghan are trying to give their kids some good karma by moving to America.  I hope it works. Because bad karma is striking back at Charles right now.

KIDS HELP ELDERS GET VACCINE

It was an amazing, long anticipated day– entering the clinic parking lot to finally get the Covid-19 vaccine. But as we pulled in, I noticed a car where a young guy sat behind the wheel. His appearance worried me a bit—partly shaved head, piercings and metal coming out of every orifice. While waiting for my husband to get out of the car, I saw a dark sedan pull up. As an elderly couple opened their door , the young man got out and headed their way. An alarm went off in my head. Was he going to mug them? But no, he  held out his arms for them to lean on, and slowly walked them inside. It’s touching to see kids help their elders get the vaccine.

Inside, everything was highly organized and efficient. Since we had preregistered, there was no wait. But after getting vaccinated, we had to wait awhile to make sure we had no reaction. That’s when I could observe the patients coming in. This was the over 80 crowd, and at least half of them were accompanied by what appeared to be a child or grandchild. It’s safe to say that the kids were the ones who had gotten their parents or grandparents signed up.

You couldn’t just walk in to get vaccinated. You had to be in the “eligible” category (over 80) and provide your insurance card. Then, you could register for an appointment either over the phone or online. The phone lines were jammed all day long, so the best way to get an appointment was online.  I’m lucky to know my way around the internet. That’s because I had a job  that entailed the use of computers. Many octogenarians wouldn’t have the slightest idea. So I’m guessing the metal kid got his grandparents registered online.

kids help elders get vaccine. Hooray for these young caregivers.
Kids help elders get vaccine. It’s heartwarming to see children take care of their parents.

There were sons with fathers on canes or in wheel chairs. And daughters who brought their parents to check in. Love was in the air.  Lucky, my husband and I can still navigate on our own. But It was heartwarming to see so many children taking the time to get their parents or grandparents  vaccinated. Hooray for family caregivers, and kids who help their elders get the vaccine.

OBITS REVEAL A DYING CULTURE

Most people don’t enjoy reading newspaper obituaries, unless it happens to be someone they know.  However, I’ve always found them fascinating  if they contain interesting details about someone’s time on this earth.    My contemporaries are beginning to leave this world at an alarming rate,  and their obituaries reveal a dying culture.

First, it’s important to realize that  obituaries are bought and paid for by the survivors. Newspapers used to publish them for free, but no more.  You can pay anywhere from $200 to $1000, depending on how many lines of copy.  And if the obit is in an extra day, it provides even more revenue for struggling newspapers who are hard up for advertising dollars.

An  obituary of a certain class of  women  of my generation provides a startling glimpse into the marriage customs of the elite during the fifties and sixties.  After the usual bio as to her parentage, we often find that she attended a well known college where she met and married, “the love of her life.”  She belonged to a sorority, which meant she was attractive, and came from a “good family.”  Having landed a college man who could support her, she may have taught school for a year or so before settling down as a homebody and raising her children.  No career for her.  She was a member of  faith based women’s clubs and other feminine circles.  Her highest achievements may have included serving as president of the PTA.  She belonged to a country club, where she played golf, tennis and bridge. If the husband did well enough , they might have spent summers at their Michigan cottage  or winters in their Florida home.

The most salient feature of these obits is the age at which the woman married…a median of 21.  Many of my college friends married after their freshman or sophomore year, before they were even 20! Which brings us back to that “love of her life,” issue.  I guess they didn’t have a chance to find out if  they could  have fallen in love with someone else.

Obits Reveal Dying Culture
In 1960, the average bride was 20. Now, Obits Reveal a Dying Culture, with the average bride almost 30..

But in the late sixties and early seventies, all that began to change.  The pill, and the subsequent women’s movement, gave women and men the freedom to live together without benefit of matrimony.  Before 1970, few couples would have lived together outside of marriage. But by the late 1990’s at least 50 to 60% of people did.

By the year 2018, only 29% of Americans age 18-34 were married, compared to 59% in 1968,  Men and women aren’t in a big rush to get married.  The average age of marriage has gone from 21 in 1950 to almost 30 in 2020.

The obituary of a millennial woman will probably read more like her male counterparts.  Her life will not be defined by the person whom she married.    She probably won’t have met “the love of her life” in college.  While she might enjoy tennis , golf,  or bridge, she didn’t have the time to pursue them as an important  component of her social life.    She may have had a career as an accountant, doctor, lawyer, or marketing manager. She probably didn’t marry until she was close to 30, and she might have had more than one husband.

Women are no longer living in the shadow of their  husbands. Obituaries of elderly women reveal a dying culture.

DEMI UPSTAGES BRUCE WILLIS’ WIFE

Of all the wacky things I’ve seen coming out of this pandemic, it’s the photo  of Bruce Willis quarantining with ex-wife Demi  Moore and their kids. His daughter, Rumor, said that his current wife,  Emma  Hemming, is “just fine” with it. Really?  She’s all by herself with their two little girls,  while he’s partying with his ex and grown kids. On top of that, they brag about it , posting Instagram pictures of themselves in matching pajamas. Demi Moore has definitely upstaged Bruce Willis’ current wife.

Bruce Willis self isolates with ex wife Demi
How would you like it if your husband quarantined with his ex-wife? Demi upstages Bruce Willis’ wife on instagram.

I can see where Bruce might have gotten stranded  in his vacation home during the  coronavirus pandemic.  And one of his little kids had to go to the doctor, so his current wife had to do what mom’s do—stay home in LA and take care of the children..  Maybe they started out thinking it would only be a couple of weeks before they could be back together.   But two months?  If I’m the current wife, I’d be saying.  “Look, Bruce. You can either buy or rent a trailer, come get me, and help me quarantine with our little girls.”   But maybe, she didn’t really care.  If not, why?

The first thing that strikes you about Emma  is how much she looks like a younger version of Demi.  If it were me, that would make me kind of leery. .  Who wants to be a substitute/fill in for Wife #1.  Especially if he’d rather quarantine with her than me during the covid-19 outbreak. . On the other hand, Emma  might be glad to be rid of the guy.  Like:  Ok Demi, I don’t want to be stuck with Bruce 24/7, so could you take care of him for me?

At any rate, I’m sure she wasn’t expecting to see Demi maneuvering Bruce Willis into a photo shoot..  I mean, if there’s going to be a picture of my husband on the internet, it had better be with me and our kids—not Demi and their kids.  Anyway, everyone finally  got back together around May 4. Publicly, Emma seems to be a good sport about the whole thing.  But is she inwardly seething?  I think most women would be. But that’s Hollywood for you.

STAY-AT-HOME WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

Yesterday was our 32nd wedding anniversary.  We were over 50 when we married, and certainly didn’t rush into anything.  Both of us had come out of long marriages and painful divorces.  We had dated for two years before we decided to tie the knot.  It wasn’t an easy decision, for various reasons. But here we are still together after all these years.  My husband is an incurable romantic, and he’s never missed sending me a card, taking me to dinner, and bringing me flowers.  But this Stay-At-Home Wedding anniversary was a challenge.

On Wednesday, while  checking my email, my husband asked me to give him a couple sheets of white computer paper.  I wondered what he was planning to write, but decided it was his own business.  So I didn’t ask. And he didn’t tell.  That afternoon, I went out to the yard and found a clump of daffodils in bloom.  I brought them inside, and arranged them in a vase on the coffee table.

Our Stay-At-Home Wedding Anniversary was sweet
A homemade card. Flowers from the yard. A perfect Stay-At-Home Wedding Anniversary

The next morning, my husband presented me with a card while we were having coffee.  He had made it himself, with the help of some pretty stickers on the front.  Inside, was a picture of us together during our younger days.  It was at a happy event—I think maybe taken at the Beef N Boards Theater in Indy. And he wrote me a love letter, which meant more to me than the most expensive Hallmark Card.   That afternoon, we found some old 45’s and his son brought us over a record player.  We spent a couple of hours sorting through his collection, listening to Broadway shows, and reminiscing.  With all the  restaurants  closed,  our usual evening out wasn’t possible.  Instead, I fixed his favorite Swiss Steak .

.A homemade card, flowers from the yard, music, wine, and good food.  Our Stay Home Wedding Anniversary was a good one.
