CREEPY GHOST MALLS A SCARY SIGN

When was the last time you visited a shopping mall?  For me, it had been almost  two years, since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.  I knew things had been doing downhill before that, when Macy’s closed and Sears pulled out.  Still it was a bustling place with rows of boutiques and specialty shops to meet every need. Retail therapy was alive and well.  Now fully vaccinated, I drove across town to look for a new fall sweater.    Drove around to Penny’s and found they’d blocked the back entrance.  The front entrance was lit up as always, and my spirits lifted as I walked in the door. Headed straight toward the inner  mall.  Then, the shockwaves hit.  Most of the stores along the hallways  were dark and empty. Gone forever!  Only a few holdouts remained; surprisingly, a  shoe store and a nail salon.  A wave of apprehension washed over me.  Creepy glost malls are a scary sign.

Creepy Ghost Malls Are a Scary Sign
Creepy Ghost Malls Are A Scary Sign. Will the economy really bounce back from all that loss?

I needed something to bolster my spirits.  Coffee! Headed for the food court.  None of the three remaining food bars served coffee.  Only bottled beverages. The seating area was deserted..  That made everything seem worse. But of course, it made sense.  How many people sit down to eat in a dying mall?

Of the three boutiques  left that sold women’s clothing, none had a black cardigan. The merchandise  was all picked over, and there were sale racks everywhere. I saw more clerks than customers.   Empty handed, I returned to the car.  Now I was hungry, but most of the nearby restaurants were shut down.  Finally drove to a Chick Filet, where they no longer sell chicken salad sandwiches.  Only fried stuff.   Most of the seating area closed,  Lots of people ordering carryout. The cashier checked in the back and found me  some coffee, so I sat down and took off my mask to drink it,  along with some little chicken nuggets.

Why is the stock market at an all time high, and home sales  booming?  The feds tell us everything is coming up roses.  But how?  Millions of dollars in merchandise, jobs, and potential income have been lost forever in the  mall and surrounding areas.  Some of that brick and mortar money went to e-commerce, but not all. There has to be a lot of empty pockets.  Are we headed for a recession?  I don’t know, but creepy ghost malls are a scary sign.

HELP! KROGER RAN OUT OF GAS

Most people can’t remember when someone pumped your gas for you.  It was one of those services that most of us took for granted.  Often, I put  50 cents worth of gas in my dad’s car, and the attendant didn’t blink an eye. Then came the rise of self service filling stations in 1971,   and I’ve never really gotten used to it.  Pumping gas is a  smelly business, and often, I spill some  on my shoes.  That’s why I wait until the very last minute to fill my tank. Yesterday, I was down to about 20 miles worth of gas. That’s when I discovered I was out of luck. Help! Kroger ran out of gas.

In all of the decades I’ve lived on this earth, I’ve never encountered such a situation.  There was no warning sign posted anywhere.  But the filling station was eerily empty.  Plastic traffic cones had been placed beside each pump.  Still, I didn’t put everything all together.  Thought maybe it was some new policy to keep people from hitting the pumps.  Inserted my credit card, which told me it was approved. And yet, it stopped there, and wouldn’t let me start filling up.  I looked around in confusion while another car pulled up and stopped.  Seeing my dilemma, a  gentleman got out of his car and explained that Kroger was out of gas. Then he showed me how to retrieve my credit card by hitting “cancel” then “clear.” .  Thank heaven for the kindness of strangers.

Was this situation an anomaly or will it become commonplace in the coming months?  There’s a shortage of truck drivers to transport gas from  the pipelines, and across the nation.  And cyberattacks are hitting the pipelines and shutting them down.  Adding insult to injury is the fact that prices are  higher than they’ve been for years.

Help! Kroger ran out of gas. It's a sign of the times.
HELP! KROGER RAN OUT OF GAS. During the gas shortage, some drivers may start hoarding gas.

I suspect some people may start hoarding gas by filling up  5 gallon containers and storing them in their garage.  All of which won’t help matters at all. Who is to blame?  I guess the obvious scapegoat is the Biden administration.  Shutting down the Keystone  pipeline, cyberattacks,  paying people not to work, the Covid -19  pandemic…..  Figure it out, based on your political leanings.

All I know is this: I will not wait till I’m almost on empty before filling my gas tank. I won’t  complain about having to pump my own gas.  And,  hopefully, that’s the last time I have to cry, ” Help! Kroger ran out of gas.”

WE MAY NEED A THIRD PARTY CANDIDATE

For the past two presidential elections, most American’s voted against one candidate–not for.  Even Trump was surprised when he beat Hilary Clinton in the 2016 election.  But the fact is, lots of people didn’t like her at all, for various reasons.  Misogyny,  mainly.  But others disliked her defense of her husband’s affairs, and the way she threw the women he targeted under the bus. And  there was Benghazi, when our American ambassador was left hung out to dry while she was Secretary of State.  And then came election 2020.  By then, Trump had made so many ridiculous gaffes and mistakes with the Covid-19 pandemic, that people were willing to vote for anyone who opposed him.  Hence, we elected a 42 year political hack  who never had what it took to run for president—until now.   Seems the Democrats and Republicans are so mired in their own party politics that they can’t come up with a truly appealing candidate. Makes you wonder. We may need a third party  candidate.

We may need a third party for America to come to its senses.
We may need a third party candidate, since Democrats and Republicans can’t come up with an appealing one..

I’m an independent voter which has it’s disadvantages, because you can’t vote in the primaries.  But I’ll be darned if I will go all out for any politician I don’t think would do a good job, just because I want to be part of a crowd.  In the days before internet dating sites,  young people used to join politically active organizations as a way to meet members of the opposite sex.  Remember, those were the days when you were supposed to be a joiner if you were looking to find a spouse,   Churches and political parties were fertile mating grounds.

The majority of young people I know vote Democratic. They love causes, and joining protest groups.  Give them something to march about , and they’ll be there in rain, sleet and snow.  Most older people are fairly quiet about their opinions, which more often than not are conservative. Middle age  conservatives are a bit more vocal—driving around town with American flags and signs that say f*** Biden.  But the truth is, neither party has produced a truly dynamic, appealing candidate for the past two elections.

I don’t know how anyone could support either party’s platform 100%.  Do we really believe that all Republicans oppose abortion rights, and all Democrats want open borders?  I don’t think so.

It may be time for a  third party.   Call it  Common Sense, or  whatever you like, but let it be centrist.  And please, come up with an intelligent inspiring,  candidate

FANNIE MAY IS FADING AWAY

Remember when your city had a Fannie May store?  Ours was on a corner right in the center of town.  I think my sister worked there for awhile.  They gave away samples.  Who could resist buying a pound of Mint Meltaways or Chocolate Truffles.  The perfect gift for every occasion.  Even after my children left home and spread out across the country, they loved receiving a box of their favorite chocolates in the mail.  The candy was a bit more expensive than drugstore chocolates, but well worth it.  Sadly, it’s one of life’s simple pleasures that’s coming to an end. Fannie May is fading away.

Fannie May is fading away. Their mail order prices have doubled.
Fannie May is fading away. They have few retail stores, and mail order prices have doubled when you add shipping costs.

For decades, I sent loved ones Fannie May Candy for every birthday, Christmas and Easter.  Some had favorites, like Pixies.  Others didn’t care, as long as it was from Fannie May.  It was something a little special that I enjoyed doing.

Most of the retail stores closed several years ago., although there are still a few in Illinois and Indiana.  For awhile, you could  scout around for a Fannie May kiosk in some malls.  They didn’t ship, but  for $22, you could buy a pound that fit into a post office sleeve, and mail it to anywhere in the USA for $5.   When they closed those stores, you could still order directly by calling Fannie May.  I think they had free shipping.  And then that stopped. You couldn’t order online at all.  Now, Fannie May has  changed their policy once again and you can order online, but shipping and handling costs are $23.95!  No savings there.

Last week, I decided to order candy for  a  relative recovering from surgery. Much to my surprise, Fannie May Chocolates now sell for $49.95  a pound on Amazon.    That 100% inflation. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen,  and Federal Reserve Chairmen  Jerome Powell say our inflation rate is 5%.  Don’t believe them.

.No wonder  Fannie May is fading away.  There’s a limit to how much the average person will pay for a box of chocolates.

USA CAME CLOSE TO A COUP D’ETAT

When was the last time a United States presidency faced a military takeover?  I think it was talked about back in 1861, after Lincoln was elected president. Southern politicians who supported  slavery  attempted a military takeover to prevent Lincoln’s inauguration.  They even planned an assassination before he was able to reach Washington DC by rail.  The coup d’etat didn’t succeed, but Civil War soon broke out.  After that, there has never been such an attempt—until now.  Last year, the USA came close to a coup d’etat.

USA Came Close to a Coup D'Etat with Pelosi and Milley.
USA came close to a Coup D’Etat when Pelosi and Milley decided to intervene in presidential powers.

Republican Donald Trump was probably one of the most divisive presidents we’ve ever had in the United States.  Nevertheless, he won the election, defeating Hillary Clinton in 2016.  Like it or not, he was the president until January of 2021..  Now, along comes General MIlley, chairman of the  Joint Chiefs of Staff who, with Democratic  House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, decides Trump is going crazy after losing the 2020 election. .  No medical diagnosis, just a gut feeling.. They fear that he will attempt a coup to stay in power, and might even start a war with China. .With the encouragement of Pelosi, Milley calls China and offers to give them a heads up if Trump launches an attack.

To me, when one political party tries to undermine the powers of  an elected president with the help of the military,  that constitutes an attempted  coup d’etat.

Coup d’etats were pretty common in Latin  American countries.  In fact, our government actually supported the 1955 military takeover of Argentina when Peron was the elected president. (Remember “Don’t Cry for me Argentina?) However,  for the past 160 years, our country has always had a peaceful transfer of power, even in hotly contested elections like Bush vs Gore in the year 2000.

But now,  a military commander planned to  usurp the  presidency with permission of  the opposing party.   This  tells me the country is as close to a civil war as it’s ever been.  When one political  party colludes with the military to take over the powers of the president, that’s a coup d’eat.  If we were that close to such a possibility in the year  2021, what will happen next in this deeply divided country?

SHOULD VOTERS TRUST MACHINES?

The latest glitch in the California recall election is enough to alarm any voter. People who came to the polls in San Fernando Valley were informed that they had already voted,  and therefore couldn’t vote again.  Turned out they actually hadn’t voted—it was just a malfunction of a voting machine. Consequently, they were given provisional ballets. Oh, this is so scary.  Anything could happen to provisional ballets.  They might be disqualified, or even thrown in the waste basket.   As a result of this debacle, everyone is wondering: Should voters trust machines?

The integrity of our voting process  has always been fragile.  My first year out of college, I had a roommate who was a volunteer at a voting site on the South Side of Chicago. I think her father was a big wheel in the Republican party in downstate Illinois.  Therefore, she was more involved with  politics than anyone I had ever known at that age.

This was the year that Kennedy was elected in a very narrow victory over Nixon.  That evening,  Carol came home from her stint in a snit.  Seems bottles of whiskey were being passed out to folks who voted they way they were told.  The story of Joe Kennedy stealing the election in Illinois is pretty much accepted as history nowadays.  But at the time,  the public was too naïve to think anyone could get away with such blatant bribery and election rigging. Supposedly, you can’t give food and drink to people waiting in line to vote.  But apparently they did this year in certain cities.

People shouldn’t have to stand in long line  lines to vote.  I wouldn’t vote at all, if that were the case.  Because I’m retired, I can go to the polls at a convenient time, but not everyone can.    I’m pretty much okay with mail in ballots, as long as they’re verified with a voter ID.  Signature matching?  I dunno.  A lot of young people don’t sign their name in cursive.  They just scribble a few lines to represent their signature. Cursive isn’t even taught in some schools.

Should Voters Trust Machines? Probably not.
Should Voters Trust Machines? Hand counting votes would restore trust in the process.

As a matter of fact,   I  believe we’re way too reliant on computers to do the counting.  As the saying goes, there’s many a slip between the cup and the lip.  My pc messes up a lot.  Push the wrong button, and the results are totally skewed.  And since they have to do hand recounts on close elections, it seems to me they may as well do hand counts to begin with.  Should voters trust machines?  Let’s take the time to get it right, and restore faith in the voting system

DID SEPT 11 2021 UNITE US?

We, as a country, were fairly well united last  Saturday morning.    The media was filled with emotionally draining pictures of the twin towers attack in New York City.  Often, I had to put down the newspapers or walk away from the television.  It brought back too many bad memories of that nightmarish time,  as first responders sifted through the rubble, looking for bodies of 3,000 victims.   Last week,  politicians solemnly declared that the 20th anniversary of that event would unite all American’s in sorrow and grief.   But did Sept 11 2021 unite us?

Did Sept 11 2021 unite us? Maybe, for a few hours, but the media won't let it happen.
Did Sept 11 2021 unite us? Just for a little while it did, but the media won’t let it happen.

On Saturday night, we heard a couple of loud explosive booms nearby.  Cherry bombs?  I thought they were illegal.  .  Looked out the window, and saw a parade of trucks with American Flags and Trump posters slowly making it’s noisy way down the street in front of our house.  Presume they were going throughout the city.    How was this supposed to help unify the country?

On Sunday afternoon, I turned on my computer and checked the various news outlets.   MSNBC,  CNN and Fox News, especially, since they’re the most biased.  And guess what?  It was business as usual.  Trump bashing/ Biden defending vs  Biden bashing/ Trump defending/.   As an example, Headlines:

MNBC:  Trump plans to spend 9/11 anniversary at Casino boxing match.

CNN:  Biden has every right to dismiss Kellyanne Conway

Fox: Army veteran blasts feckless, incompetent administration for Afghan failure.

Couldn’t all of them have waited just one more day before resuming  their divisive diatribes? Are they afraid the Biden and Trump haters might mingle in unity for a day or so? Maybe even show some understanding of each others’ feelings?     Cable news  ratings might nosedive while people of opposing viewpoints sat down and  had a beer together. And the media won’t  let that happen.

Did Sept 22, 2021 unite us?  I don’t think so.
